The General Purpose (GP) Rating Course is a 6-month pre-sea training program approved by DG Shipping, Government of India. It prepares candidates to work in both the Deck and Engine Departments of merchant navy vessels.
Ideal for 10th pass & above any graduates candidates, this course covers safety training, seamanship, basic engineering skills, and shipboard operationsβlaying the foundation for a rewarding maritime career.
π³οΈ After course completion, candidates are eligible to join Indian or foreign ships as Ordinary Seamen, Wipers, or Trainee Ratings, with 100% placement support by The Seaways Placement & Services.
β Eligibility For Pre Sea Course of General Purpose Rating
To enroll in GPR (General Purpose Rating Pre-Sea Courses, candidates must meet the following criteria:
β Educational Qualification:

Minimum 10th Pass & above any graduates from a recognized board.
β Age Limit:

Minimum: 17.5 years

Maximum: 35 years (may vary slightly depending on the institute)
β Medical Fitness:

Must be medically fit as per DG Shipping norms

Normal eyesight and no color blindness (confirmed through an approved medical test by a DG Shipping-certified doctor)

Must be an Indian citizen

β Job Roles & Responsibilities for G P Rating Certified Candidates
(Indian & Foreign Going Vessels)
Candidates with general purpose rating training are eligible to work onboard various types of vessels such as cargo ships, container ships, tugs, offshore supply vessels, tankers, and passenger ships.
They typically join as Ordinary Seamen (OS) or Wipers in the Deck or Engine Departments depending on their skills and interest.

- Assisting in berthing/unberthing operations (handling ropes, mooring lines)

- Daily maintenance of the ship's deck β chipping, painting, and cleaning

- Assisting officers with navigational watch and lookout duties

- Handling cargo gear and ensuring deck safety equipment is in place

- Performing safety drills and emergency response activities

- Assisting engineers in routine maintenance and cleaning of engine room machinery
